When Saying Yes Costs You Something
God can turn that costly yes into something eternal.
Ruth 4:6
“At this, the guardian-redeemer said, ‘Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.’’
Praise the Lord, my friend,
In the above verse, there’s Boaz, and there’s another man who had the right to redeem Ruth before him.
Ruth was a widow who had lost everything.
And in those times, a close relative of her late husband could buy back the family’s land and marry the widow so that the family name would continue.
The man who was first in line had that right, but he refused.
He said no because it could put his own property and future at risk.
He cared more about keeping what he had than doing what was right.
Then Boaz made his choice.
He wasn’t the closest relative, but he decided to redeem Ruth when the other man would not.
He knew that saying yes would not be easy.
It meant using his own money to buy the land, taking care of Ruth and Naomi, and facing what others might say since Ruth was from another country.
Still, Boaz trusted God and chose to obey Him, and that choice changed everything.
God used his obedience to bless Ruth and her family.
And, from that family came King David, and later, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
My friend, this shows how one step of faith can lead to something far greater than we could ever plan.
Boaz didn’t know that his decision that day would become part of God’s plan for salvation.
He just did what was right before God, and God used it for His purpose.
In that same way, our choice of obedience may look small or negligible in the moment, but it carries weight in the kingdom of God.
And, when we obey God, it may not always feel like something great is happening.
At times, it may even look like nothing has changed.
But God is always working behind the scenes through those small steps of faith.
Just like us, Boaz had no idea what God would do with his obedience, but he still made that choice, trusting God.
And that is where most of us struggle.
We often want to see the full picture before taking the first step.
But God wants us to trust Him and move forward without relying on our own understanding and strength.
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
When we live by this verse, we begin to see that trusting God is not only about believing His promises, but also about surrendering our plans to Him.
It means letting go of control and allowing Him to lead, even when the path ahead feels uncertain.
And, each time we choose to depend on His wisdom instead of our own, we make room for His peace to fill our hearts.
So, my friend, don’t worry about how everything will turn out.
Just keep your heart steady in Him and take that step of obedience with a trust that the same God who guided Boaz’s path will guide yours, too.
And when you look back after a few days, months, or years, you’ll see how every choice of obedience you made had a specific purpose.
I know it is easier said than done to be obedient and trust God fully, especially when you are under pressure or things around you seem to be falling apart.
Hence, let’s pray every day for His wisdom, guidance, and strength to walk in faith even when it feels hard.
Let’s ask Him to help us see things through His eyes, not ours, and to remind us that His plans are never to harm but to lead us closer to His purpose.
Let’s pray together
Dear gracious heavenly father, thank You for reminding me today that trusting You is always the right choice, even when I don’t understand everything.
Help me to follow You with a heart that listens and obeys.
When I hesitate or fear the cost of obedience, remind me that You never ask for anything without a reason.
Give me the strength to walk in faith like Boaz did, and teach me to depend on Your wisdom more than my own.
And to find peace in knowing that Your plans are always good.
Lord, when the path feels uncertain, help me to stay close to You.
Lead my steps, transform my heart, and let my life bring glory to Your name, Father.
In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen.
Praise God.
